Coração do Ceará – Destino de todos
"Coração do Ceará" means "The heart of Ceará" and refers to the geographical location of the city, which is in the center of the Federal State of Ceará. "Destino para Todos" means "destination for everybody". This is also correct, because the small city in combination with a journey to it´s surrounding, offers many interesting sights and opportunities. Therefore a trip to this region is a great option for anyone who likes more than just the beach...
|For tourists who stay in Fortaleza a trip to Quixeramobim is the ideal supplement to the beaches. On the journey the traveler can explore the mountains "Serra de Baturité" with a small detour. We advise the route Fortaleza - Maranquape - Palmácia - Pacoti - Guaramiranga to arrive in the town of Baturité. When you like hiking, the rain forest and waterfalls, you should plan to stay at least one night in the mountains. But even without a rest, you will get to know a large part of this green paradise on this trip.|
From Baturité the traveler goes on toward Quixadá. The road is very good. Generally though, we don´t recommend traveling during the night because of the risk of collision with donkeys, cows, horses, dogs, sheep…. wandering the roads.
At a couple of miles before the city of Quixadá you will get a good view of the mountains of the "Serra de Estevão" at the horizon. At the next crossing, you turn left into the direction of Quixadá. Now, step by step you can see more and more strange singular rock formations and "dive" slowly into the valley "Vale Monumental", which is formed by innumerable impressive monoliths. These rocks seam like a bizarre movie scenery.
You should take out at least one day for the city and the region of Quixadá, with it´s many points of interest. Particularly we recommend the dam "Cedro", the view from the sanctuary "Imaculada Rainha do Sertão", the farm "Fazenda Magé", the ascent of the rock "Galinha Choka" - the emblem of the city - and a trip to the rocky surroundings "Serra Do Padre" with the sight "Trilha das Andorinhas". With sufficient time on hand, you could also visit the Pousada "Casa de Repouso São José" - an old monastery in the mountains of the "Serra de Estevão". This is a wonderful place with great opportunities for hiking.
After the rest in Quixadá, you move on through the valley "Vale Monumental", continuing the journey to the west to the town of Quixeramobim. Now the distance to your goal is approx. 30 miles. This part of the journey is very attractive, because of the interesting landscape and the excellent roads.
After about 5 miles you will see a beautiful farm to your right, with a small lake and some huge palm trees - the "Fazenda Pé de Serra". It´s worth to make a stop here, if only to take some pictures of the big bird "Ema".
Another mile onwards, you arrive at a crossing, to the left leading to the town - and barrage - of Banabuiu. If you enjoy a good meal in a particularly beautiful ambience, you should enter this road to visit the hotel "Pedra dos Ventos Resort", which is situated in the village of Juatama - just go left at the next crossing. The view, the meals and the service are excellent - and at a pleasant price. On top of that the hotel offers quality accommodation, a clean pool, as well as hiking trails of various lengths and difficulties.
|Arriving in QUIXERAMOBIM, you simultaneously arrives at the geographical center of the fascinating Federal State of CEARÁ in the northeast of Brazil. And you are filled already with many impressions from the inland of Ceará. |
The small town invites to stay some days. The roads and squares are broad and green thanks to the many plants and trees. This region has so many points of interest, that you will need more than one week to visit all of them. The mines of Nenelândia and Berilândia (approx. 30 miles south of the city) are particularly interesting. They are a plentiful source of precious and semi-precious stones such as Amethyst, Crystal, several kinds of Quartz, Aquamarine and Tourmaline. On the way to the district Nenelândia the traveler drives by the way to the abandoned farm "Fazenda Salva Vida" with the mystical rock "Pedra da Gaveta". Besides the rock and a beautiful landscape there is an artificial lake with clear water for a refreshing bath.
Since generations, the stones of the region are polished in Quixeramobim. Only some years ago people began to create jewels with this stones. The mineral exhibition of João Batista in the center of the city shows some interesting exhibits. You should however announce your visit on beforehand, since often the office of João Batista is closed.
When you take an interest in visiting a manufactory for jewels, you should visit "Ceará Designer". Francisco Antonio Rabêlo, the founder and owner of the company, designs graceful jewels since the year 2002. A team of 22 employees transforms these designs from paper into stone and metal. The entire process depends on manual labour of excellent quality. That´s why the first customers from Europe are already ordering jewels from "Ceará Designer" for resale.
To us, Quixeramobim is one of the pleasant surprises of Brazil, because on our journeys we went past this city three times already. The by-pass road only shows some petrol stations and pubs and restaurants.
When we came to Quixeramobim in June 2005, to create the presentation of the farm "Fazenda Parelhas", we were very surprised at the potential of this region. Now it´s January 2006 and we can´t see an end to our stay and work. This web-presentation of the county of Quixeramobim is a summary of our work of the last months. You can watch more than 450 photos to get a visual impression and get the feeling that this region is worth a journey.
There are many different opinions about the origin of the name "Quixeramobim", however all these theories show no clear evidence. The name is pronounced "Kisheramobing", with the stress on the last syllable.
The county of Quixeramobim counts about 60000 inhabitants, and the tendency is rising - in opposition to other counties of the inland. The reason for this trend is in particular the large shoe factory, which essentially produces for the Nike brand. More than 3000 people are employed in the halls of this factory, receiving more than average wages. A further rise of the production capacity is already planned, creating another 5000 vacancies. This provides the small city with a relatively high purchasing power - a major factor for the development of the society and business.Part of the taxes the city levies, is applied to keep and improve the clean and green image of the town. A further large part of the taxes flows each month to the public hospital of the region.
One of the great successes of the city is the pilot project "Projeto Pingo d´Água", which means "water drop". The experiences gained from this project show that the key to the further development of the county, is the availability of sufficient water. The institute "Instituto Sertão Vivo" found the solution for a good independent water supply in the manual construction of simple wells in close proximity to rivers and brooks, using a special tube technology.
Where some years ago only dry country existed outside of the rain season, today you find a green oasis with profit yielding agriculture. Life changed drastically, and an increase in the population is registered. In many cases the younger generation returned to work in the agriculture, a family business.
Another interesting pilot project is the production of bio-diesel on the farm "Fazenda Normal". This bio-diesel is used as the primary source of fuel for the diesel-generator, which supplies the small settlement of Santa Maria in the mountains of the "Serrinha Santa Maria" with electricity.
Quixeramobim is the oldest city in the inland of the state of Ceará. In 1704 the settlement is mentioned for the first time, and in 1859 Quixeramobim gets the status of a city. Before the Europeans took the country, it was inhabited by Indians of different tribes. In the region of Quixeramobim innumerable rocks exist with inscriptions and designs from times long ago.
The most well-known personalities of the city of Quixeramobim are Antônio Conselheiro and Fausto Nilo. Antônio Conselheiro was born on the 13. of march 1830 in Quixeramobim and became later the leader of the civil war "Guerra de Canudos" in the Federal State of Bahia. Fausto Nilo is a well-known architect and a composer of folk-music.

During the rain season, 50 mm on the rain gauge in one day aren´t unusual. The annual average is 668.4 mm, which shows clearly the unequal distribution of the rain over the year. Normally the rain season starts in February and persists until May.
Clean rainwater has a high value in the region. Many households collect the rainwater in cisterns and use it over the whole year as drinking water.
The best time to make a journey to Quixeramobim is after the rain season in June, July or August. The plants and trees are green - the nature is in full splendor. Later on in the year, nature begins to dry until only small green areas remain, which are formed by particularly resistant evergreen plants such as the Pau branco, the Oiticica, the Pau d´arco, the Aroeira and the Jatobá. The name of this vegetational zone is "Caatinga", which is pronounced "Kaatshinga", with stress on the "i". This zone is rich of species: more than 460 varieties of birds and more than 8700 types of plants. It is particularly delightful to explore nature on horseback: the higher position often allows a good view into the nests of the birds in the trees and bushes.
The maximum registered temperature is 38 °C, the average being 32 °C. The minimum registered temperature is 16.8 °C, averaging at 24 °C. These are temperatures for excellent holydays. The dry period is particularly suitable for motorcycle fans. Rent a motorcycle and a helmet in Fortaleza and make a trip around Ceará - it´s simply a dream! (You will need a credit card and international driving license.)

- Riding horses,
- Off Road - trips,
In the year 2000, 58.918 inhabitants were registered in the county of Quixeramobim, resulting in an average density of 16,46 inhabitants/km². The tendency is an increase of the population due to positive factors like the climate, the shoe factory and the project Pingo d´Água.
The drving factors of the economy are the shoe factory, the agriculture, the cattle breeding and the dairy industry, which all contribute their part to the stability and prosperity of the region. The Quixeramobim region is the largest producer of dairy products in the federal state of Ceará, producing over 110.000 liters/day. Besides the cattle, several farms are breeding sheep, goats, pigs and chickens.
